Take climate action! Support a world beyond fossil fuels!
Extreme weather events worldwide are multiplying at an alarming rate. As droughts, floods, and heat waves become more extreme, so does their impact on social, environmental and economic systems. Despite the urgent need to accelerate climate action, the German government is actively reversing course. The Minister of Economic Affairs Katherina Reiche (CDU) aims to slow down the recently accelerated expansion of renewable energies, threatening one of the greatest successes of the climate movement. Reiche plans to build close to 40 new gas-fired power plants and to block the transition to clean heating technologies, to the delight of fossil fuel corporations.
We must now, once again, take to the streets. Massive protests are crucial in pushing for new legislation and decision on important climate targets, and have already led to the scaling of renewable energy solutions, the planned phasing-out of combustion engines, as well as the initiative to end oil and gas dependence for residential and commercial heating. We must defend these achievements against setbacks coming from the fossil fuel lobby and government, and demand greater climate action.
We demand that our democratic government delivers social justice and climate action. The most vulnerable, underserved and marginalized communities here at home and in the global south, suffer the most from the man-made climate crisis. As one of the world's top 10 greenhouse gas emitters, the EU contributes over two-thirds of global emissions, for which Germany shares responsibility due to its significant contribution. Mass protests have already proven their impact; they pushed the last black-red coalition, resulting in the Climate Protection Act and the coal phase-out. Now, we must act again!
On Saturday, September 20, hundreds of thousands of people are taking to the streets nationwide. Every age, every voice, this fight is for you.
